Local knowledge
Employment law in Aberdeen
Aberdeen’s economy has been anchored by energy since the first major North Sea discovery in 1970, and the city is a world centre for undersea petroleum technology. FirstGroup also has its global headquarters here. Oil and gas work brings its own employment questions, from redundancy rounds when activity falls to offshore contracts, bonus schemes and restrictive covenants for engineers and managers who move between competing firms.
As North Sea reserves decline, the city is working to present itself as an energy capital rather than simply an oil capital. Alongside that shift, the harbour, the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University mean that many people work in research, engineering, shipping and higher education, where restructuring, fixed-term contracts and changes to terms and conditions often need careful handling.
For Aberdeen employers, we help with contracts and policies, restructuring and redundancy consultation, settlement agreements and restrictive covenants that protect client relationships and know-how. We also advise on absence and performance management, so that difficult decisions about staff are made fairly, consistently and with a clear written record that will stand up if it is later questioned.

Questions
Aberdeen employment law questions
Short answers to common questions. Every situation is different, so the free consultation is the best place to start.
Do I need to travel to Glasgow for advice?
Not necessarily. Call us on 0141 471 9166 or book online and we will arrange your free 30-minute consultation by video, by phone or in person. Most of our meetings take place by video, so there is usually no need to travel. If you would like to meet in person, our office is at 11 Ashley Street, Glasgow, and direct trains run between Aberdeen and Glasgow Queen Street.
Where would an Aberdeen employment tribunal hearing take place?
Employment Tribunals Scotland has a hearing centre at AB1, 48 Huntly Street, Aberdeen. Some hearings also take place by video. We will explain what to expect at each stage.
How long do I have to bring a claim?
For most claims the time limit is now six months from the date of the act you are complaining about, such as your dismissal. This changed on 1 October 2026; before then it was three months less one day. You usually need to start Acas early conciliation first, and time limits can be strict, so speak to a solicitor as early as you can.
Can you help Aberdeen businesses with staff issues?
Yes. We advise Aberdeen employers of all sizes on contracts, restructuring, settlement agreements, restrictive covenants, absence and performance management, and handling whistleblowing reports.
