Local knowledge
Employment law in Newcastle
Newcastle’s economy is now led by office, service and retail jobs, with strengths in science, finance, education, tourism and nightlife. Newcastle University and Northumbria University are major institutions, the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital are large teaching hospitals, and Greggs has its headquarters in the city. These sectors raise issues ranging from restructuring and fixed-term contracts to shift work and pay.
Eldon Square and Northumberland Street make the city centre a major shopping destination, and hospitality and the night-time economy rely on evening and weekend shifts. Questions about holiday pay, zero-hours arrangements and dismissal without a proper process can arise in these sectors. The legislation behind these rights applies across Great Britain, but Newcastle claims are heard in the employment tribunal for England and Wales.
For Newcastle employers, from retailers and hospitality businesses to professional firms and charities, we advise on contracts, restructuring, settlement agreements, restrictive covenants, and absence and performance management, and we help you respond to grievances and whistleblowing reports in a measured, well documented and timely way.

Questions
Newcastle employment law questions
Short answers to common questions. Every situation is different, so the free consultation is the best place to start.
Can a Glasgow firm advise me in Newcastle?
Yes. Most employment rights, including protection from unfair dismissal and discrimination, come from legislation that applies across England, Wales and Scotland, so they are the same in Newcastle as in Glasgow. Call us on 0141 471 9166 or book online and we will arrange your free 30-minute consultation by video, by phone or in person. Most of our meetings take place by video, so there is usually no need to travel. Our office is at 11 Ashley Street, Glasgow.
Where would a Newcastle employment tribunal hearing take place?
The Newcastle employment tribunal is at Newcastle Civil and Family Courts and Tribunals Centre, Barras Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 8QF. Some hearings also take place by video. We will explain what to expect at each stage.
How long do I have to bring a claim?
For most claims the time limit is now six months from the date of the act you are complaining about, such as your dismissal. This changed on 1 October 2026; before then it was three months less one day. You usually need to start Acas early conciliation first, and time limits can be strict, so speak to a solicitor as early as you can.
Do you advise employers in Newcastle and the North East?
Yes. We advise Newcastle and North East employers on contracts, restructuring, settlement agreements, restrictive covenants, absence and performance management, and handling whistleblowing reports.
