Good to know

Employment law in England

UK-wide rights

Employment law is made by the UK Parliament, so rights such as unfair dismissal, discrimination, redundancy pay and holiday pay are largely the same in England as in Scotland.

Regional tribunals

Claims in England are heard by the employment tribunal for England and Wales at regional hearing centres. Each area page shows the centre that normally deals with local claims.

Six-month time limit

Since 1 October 2026, most employment tribunal claims must be started within six months. Before that the limit was three months less one day.

Kara has assisted me with a couple of employed law difficulties over the last few months,  and I can honestly say she was always supportive, informative, and very professional. I would recommend Complete Employment Glasgow to anyone without hesitation. Kara has always been empathetic to the issues I have presented to her and has dealt with them efficiently.

Questions

Questions about advice in England

Short answers to common questions. Every situation is different, so the free consultation is the best place to start.

Can a Glasgow firm help with a claim in England?

Yes. Most employment rights come from legislation that applies across Great Britain, so the advice we give on dismissal, discrimination, redundancy and pay applies in England too. Call us on 0141 471 9166 or book online and we will arrange your free 30-minute consultation by video, by phone or in person. Most of our meetings take place by video, so there is usually no need to travel.

Do you have an office in England?

No. Our office is at 11 Ashley Street, Glasgow G3 6DR, and we advise clients across England from there.

Where would my tribunal hearing take place?

It depends on where you work. Each area page shows the hearing centre that normally deals with claims from that area, and some hearings take place by video. We will explain what to expect at each stage.

How long do I have to bring a claim?

For most claims the time limit is now six months from the date of the act you are complaining about, such as your dismissal. This changed on 1 October 2026; before then it was three months less one day. You usually need to start Acas early conciliation first, and time limits can be strict, so speak to a solicitor as early as you can.
