Our services

How we can help in Birmingham

We advise on the full range of workplace problems, whether you are an employee facing a difficult situation or an employer who wants to get a decision right.

Local knowledge

Employment law in Birmingham

Birmingham has a large services economy, with public administration, education and health, retail, and financial and professional services all major sources of jobs. Manufacturing still matters too, from Cadbury at Bournville to the independent makers of the Jewellery Quarter. These sectors raise issues ranging from restructuring and redundancy in banks and professional firms to shift patterns, overtime and health and safety concerns on factory floors.

The city is a major centre for public sector employment, and equal pay has been a prominent local issue in recent years. Employment law is largely reserved to the UK Parliament, so the equal pay, unfair dismissal and discrimination rights we advise on in Scotland apply in Birmingham too.

For Birmingham employers, including manufacturers, professional firms, retailers and care providers, we advise on contracts and handbooks, restrictive covenants, restructuring and redundancy consultation, absence and performance management, and settlement agreements, so that difficult decisions are taken fairly and documented in a way that stands up to scrutiny.

Tribunal hearings in Birmingham

The Midlands (West) employment tribunal is at Centre City Tower, 5-7 Hill Street, Birmingham B5 4UU, with its main hearing rooms on the 13th and 14th floors. It is part of the England and Wales tribunal system.

Six-month time limit

Since 1 October 2026, most employment tribunal claims must be started within six months. Before that the limit was three months less one day.

Acas comes first

You normally need to contact Acas for early conciliation before you can make a claim. The time limit pauses while conciliation is under way.

Questions

Birmingham employment law questions

Short answers to common questions. Every situation is different, so the free consultation is the best place to start.

Can a Glasgow firm advise me in Birmingham?

Yes. Most employment rights are the same across Great Britain, because employment law is largely set by the UK Parliament. Call us on 0141 471 9166 or book online and we will arrange your free 30-minute consultation by video, by phone or in person. Most of our meetings take place by video, so there is usually no need to travel. Our office is at 11 Ashley Street, Glasgow.

Where would a Birmingham employment tribunal hearing take place?

Birmingham claims are usually heard by the Midlands (West) employment tribunal at Centre City Tower, 5-7 Hill Street, Birmingham B5 4UU. Some hearings also take place by video. We will explain what to expect at each stage.

How long do I have to bring a claim?

For most claims the time limit is now six months from the date of the act you are complaining about, such as your dismissal. This changed on 1 October 2026; before then it was three months less one day. You usually need to start Acas early conciliation first, and time limits can be strict, so speak to a solicitor as early as you can.

Do you work with Birmingham employers?

Yes. We help businesses and organisations of all sizes with contracts, restructuring, settlement agreements, restrictive covenants, absence and performance management, and handling whistleblowing reports.
